Happy Pie Day!

Today is National Pie Day in the United States, but that doesn’t mean we cannot celebrate this special recognition day just north of the border. Pie has always been a favourite of mine…and a lot of you out there. There is something about the sweet filling, the buttery crust or the fact that it is soft on the inside and well-baked on the outside. No matter what your reason is for loving pie, it is just plain good!

Pie definitely deserves its own special day like this. I crave pie regularly, so I thought I would share some of my favourites that are delish and would make a great dessert… or a yummy indulgence when you need it:

Classic and All-American, so to speak. Apple Pie is a traditional mix of sweet and tart – the sweet taste of the crust goes well with the crisp, tart flavour of apples, complete with a spicy dash of cinnamon.

You thought chocolate was the primary sweet… think again! Banana Cream Pie is creamy, sweet and offers a slice of heaven to those looking to serve and enjoy a more rich dessert.

Peach Pie 018edited

Obviously, this is The Domestic Peach’s top favourite. Peach Pie is just delicious, with the great taste of peaches and cream baked into a pie, which goes well with a side of vanilla ice cream.

Think of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, just in pie form. Peanut Butter Pie is a decadent dessert and is a huge favourite of peanut lovers who also have a soft spot for chocolate.

The pure taste of citrus fruit, mixed with sugar and cream, packaged in crumble crust. Key Lime Pie is sometimes the last dessert choice from the pie family, but don’t knock it ’til you try it. It is delicious!

A Domestic Recipe – Homemade Hot Chocolate

This winter keeps getting colder and colder and nothing feels better than a hot beverage to warm up your chilled bones after being outside. Aside from the energy jolts of caffeine that I get from my morning cup o’joe, my other favourite hot drink (since childhood actually) is a classic hot chocolate. Sometimes, nothing is better than the sweet taste of chocolate, combined with milk and your choice of whipped cream or vanilla icing powder on top.

Here is a simple way to make hot chocolate in the comfort of your own home…

1/4 Cup of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1/2 Cup of Granulated Sugar
1/3 Cup of Hot Water
4 Cups of Milk (Dairy or non-dairy)
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

Optional:  You can add whipped cream or marshmallows on top of the hot chocolate for extra, sweet goodness.

1) Combine the cocoa, sugar and water in a medium saucepan.

2) Over medium heat, stir constantly until the mixture boils. Cook, stirring consistently for 1 minute.

3) Add in the milk, stir thoroughly, and heat up the mixture (DO NOT BOIL).

4) Remove from the heat, add the vanilla extract and stir.

5) Pour into your mug of choice and serve immediately.

6) Add fresh whipped cream or marshmallows to the top for extra sweetness if you’d like.

This recipe makes 5 cup of hot chocolate
