With a week into the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the excitement keeps building and building as the days of heavy competition, pressure and victorious wins go by in a snap.
1) Cool Runnings (1993) – Jamaica has returned to the 2014 Winter Games in the bobsleigh category. However, the journey there was originally set by the 1988 Jamaican bobsleigh team, whose inspirational story was transformed into the popular film, Cool Runnings, in the early 1990s. This movie is funny, heartwarming and has its comical yet inspirational moments. I like it!
2) Chariots of Fire (1981) – An incredible watch with that famous musical theme that we all know and love – Chariots of Fire tells the fact based story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice.
3) The Cutting Edge (1992) – Toepick! The phrase that became popular because of this movie. At the height of figure skating’s popularity, The Cutting Edge hit movie theatres after the completion of the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville. Putting together good looking actors, gorgeous figure skating and romance together created a golden combination.
4) Miracle (2004) – Okay, as much as I am a proud Canadian, this movie truly gave me goosebumps and even made me shed a tear by the end. Miracle tells the incredible story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team and how they played against extremely difficult obstacles and odds to gain victory against the strong Soviet hockey team in the final medal round, historically known as “Miracle on Ice.”
