Friday Flick – Life As A House

What:  Life As A House Life-as-a-house

When: 2001

Who:  Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, Hayden Christensen and Jena Malone

What’s the story:  After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, George Monroe is determined to spend the remainder of his days repairing the fragile relationship between him and his son. An architectural model designer by trait, he uses the challenge of building his dream house as a way to rebuild the bond between father and son.

Where:  A California suburb.

Why it’s amazing:  Combined with its amazing story and incredible acting, Life As A House can remind all individuals that life is precious, time flies and that you need to make the most of what you have. It also reminds the audience that relationships between parents and their children can be complicated, but if the right emotion and determination is there, anything is possible. Wounds can heal. Love can be instilled again and again.

What is bad about it:  The only thing I feel they could have explored more of is the former relationship between George and his ex-wife (played by Kristin Scott Thomas).

Wonderful scene in the movie:  When Sam takes a risk and jumps off the cliff and into the ocean, just like his father did.

Fun Fact:  The video of George and young Sam playing in the surf was shot by Kevin Kline’s wife, Phoebe Cates. She videotaped Kevin and their son Owen on the beach in Bermuda.

Perfect Picture Pick – Too Pretty to Eat

A couple of weeks ago, I attended my good friend’s wedding. Keeping with the trend of unique wedding cakes, she had three different cakes. Not only were they delicious, but at first glance, they were so beautifully designed that you almost cringed as you watched the server cut into it to serve a slice!
